13 Signs You Have the Evil Eye On You (And How to Remove It)

The evil eye is not always intentional. It is caused by intense negative energy directed at a person through envy, jealousy, or admiration so intense it carries an unconscious wish that the person would have less. Someone can give you the evil eye without meaning to harm you and without any awareness that they have done so.

In Kabbalistic tradition, which forms the foundation of my practice, the evil eye is understood as a disruption to a person’s energetic field caused by the focused negative attention of another. That disruption interferes with the natural flow of divine blessing through the person’s life, causing problems in health, finances, relationships, and general wellbeing.

The good news is that unlike deeper forms of dark energy such as black magic or deliberate curses, the evil eye is highly treatable when identified early. The key is recognizing it.

Who Is Most Vulnerable to the Evil Eye?

Anyone can receive the evil eye but certain people are more frequently targeted than others. You are at higher risk if you have recently experienced visible success or good fortune, if you have been publicly praised or admired, if someone in your life is known to be envious of you, or if you are a sensitive person whose energy field is naturally more open and receptive.

Children are particularly vulnerable which is why in many traditional cultures newborns and young children are immediately given protective amulets. The energy of a young child is open and unguarded in ways that adult energy is not.

1. Sudden and Unexplained Exhaustion

You wake up tired. You go through the day tired. No amount of sleep restores you. This profound and persistent exhaustion arrives suddenly and has no medical cause. Doctors find nothing wrong.

The evil eye works by draining a person’s vital energy. The auric field, which normally acts as a filter and generator of personal energy, becomes compromised. The result is a depletion that feels physical but originates energetically.

2. A Run of Bad Luck That Started Suddenly

Things were going well and then everything started going wrong at once. Small accidents. Minor losses. Things breaking. Plans falling apart. The timing matters here. You share exciting news and immediately afterward something goes wrong. You announce a success and the next day faces a problem. You feel happy about something and the feeling is almost immediately punctured by bad news or a setback. This pattern of good things being immediately followed by bad is a classic signature of the evil eye.

A sudden and unexplained change in appetite — either losing interest in food entirely or eating compulsively without hunger — is recognized in many traditions as a sign of energetic disruption. The body’s natural rhythms are disturbed when the energetic field is compromised.

Young children are highly sensitive to energetic disturbance. If babies or young children who normally interact with you comfortably have begun crying or showing distress in your presence, this is worth noting. Traditional Methods for Detecting the Evil Eye

Across cultures, several traditional diagnostic methods have been used to confirm the presence of the evil eye. The most well known is the olive oil test used in Greek, Italian, and Middle Eastern traditions, in which a drop of olive oil is placed in water. If the oil spreads rather than maintaining its shape, the evil eye is considered present.

In Jewish tradition, certain prayers and the wearing of a red string on the left wrist have been used both as protection and as diagnostic tools. The Hamsa, or hand of protection, appears across Jewish and Islamic traditions as a shield against the evil eye.

These traditions point to a consistent cross-cultural understanding that the evil eye is real, detectable, and removable.

Why You Should Not Attempt Removal Alone

There is information online about DIY evil eye removal. Some of these methods offer temporary relief. Very few offer complete removal and none of them address the underlying vulnerability in the energetic field that allowed the evil eye to attach in the first place.

Incomplete removal is worse than no removal in some cases. Disturbing attached negative energy without fully clearing it can cause it to embed more deeply or shift to a different area of the person’s life.
