“You Have Been Cursed by People from Their Heart with Thoughts” – What Does This Mean?

Not every curse is cast on purpose, and not every curse involves a candle, a ritual, or someone who wishes you harm by name. In more than twenty five years of working with clients on energy healing, one of the most common things I encounter is a curse that was never intended as one at all. It began as a thought. Someone else’s jealousy, resentment, anger, or disappointment took shape in their mind, aimed itself at you without them fully realizing it, and settled into your energy field. My family has practiced this kind of healing work for eight hundred years, passed down long before I was born, and if there is one thing that tradition has taught me above all else, it is that thought carries weight. It travels. And it can land on you even when the person sending it never says a word.

This article is for anyone who has felt a heaviness they cannot explain, a run of bad luck that started right after a falling out, or a sense that someone close to them is quietly resentful. You do not need to share my background or any particular belief system to read this and recognize yourself in it. What follows is written to be useful to you whether you come from a religious tradition, no tradition at all, or something in between.

Thoughts and Emotions Are a Form of Energy

Long before people used the word energy the way we do today, healers understood that emotion does not stay contained inside the person feeling it. Anger has a charge to it. Jealousy has a pull. Resentment has a weight. When someone directs one of these emotions at you, intentionally or not, they are not simply having a private feeling. They are projecting something outward, and that projection can attach itself to your aura the way dust settles on a surface it was never invited onto. Over time, enough of it accumulates and you begin to feel the effects: heaviness, stagnation, a sense that your own luck has quietly turned against you for no reason you can point to.

This is different from someone actively practicing black magic or performing a ritual curse against you, which I have written about elsewhere. A thought based curse does not require intention or skill. It only requires a strong enough emotion, held long enough, aimed in your direction.

I want to be clear about something, because clients often ask me this directly. A single moment of irritation from a coworker or a stranger’s passing envy is not going to curse you. The body and the aura are more resilient than that, and everyday friction is a normal part of life. What matters here is intensity and repetition. It is the coworker who quietly resents your promotion every single day for months. It is the ex partner who replays the breakup with anger every night before sleep. It is the family member who never got over a disagreement and thinks about it every time your name comes up. Sustained emotional focus is what gives a thought enough force to travel and attach, not a fleeting bad mood someone had on a Tuesday.

How a Thought Reaches You

I often describe it to clients the way you might describe a radio signal. You cannot see radio waves, but tune to the right frequency and the signal comes through clearly. Intense, sustained emotion works in a similar way. When someone holds onto strong feelings about you, whether it is envy over something you have achieved or bitterness over something they believe you did to them, that emotional charge can find its way into your energetic field, especially if you already have a connection to that person through family, friendship, or history. It does not need distance to matter, and it does not fade simply because the person never says anything to your face. In many cases, the people closest to you are the ones whose thoughts reach you most strongly, precisely because your energetic connection to them is already open.

Signs You May Be Affected

Clients usually come to me describing a version of the same experience, even though they arrive at it from very different situations. The most common signs I look for are:

  • A tiredness that does not match how much rest you are getting, a fatigue that sleep does not seem to touch
  • Mood swings and a low grade anxiety that appear without an obvious trigger, as though something is pressing on you from outside rather than rising from within
  • A string of bad luck that started around a specific point in time, often not long after a falling out, a job loss someone else resented, or a period when you knew you were the subject of gossip or envy
  • A disconnection from yourself, a feeling of being unmoored from whatever spiritual or grounding practice normally keeps you steady
  • Mental fog, a difficulty concentrating or making decisions that used to come easily

None of these signs on their own proves anything. Together, especially when they appear suddenly and do not respond to rest, better sleep, or a change in routine, they are worth paying attention to.

Where These Curses Usually Come From

In my experience, thought based curses trace back to a small number of sources, and almost none of them involve someone consciously trying to harm you.

  • Jealousy over a success, a relationship, or a piece of good fortune, one of the most common sources I see
  • Resentment from a conflict that was never resolved, especially when one side feels they were wronged and never got the acknowledgment they wanted
  • Anger over a perceived slight, even a small one you may not remember, if the other person keeps replaying it in their mind
  • Disappointment, particularly from someone who expected more from you or from a situation than they received

What surprises most people is that even those who love you, a parent, a sibling, a close friend, can unknowingly send this kind of energy your way during a difficult season in their own life. Intention is not the deciding factor. The intensity and duration of the feeling is.

How to Protect Your Energy and Clear What Has Already Attached

The good news is that none of this is permanent, and you are not defenseless against it. Here is what I walk clients through, in roughly the order I recommend starting:

  1. Daily energetic cleansing: a few minutes each morning visualizing a clean, protective light surrounding your body, or a practice like smudging or a salt bath a few times a week to release what has built up
  2. Strengthen your own aura: meditation, prayer if that is part of your life, time spent in nature, and a genuine daily gratitude practice all raise your baseline energy and make it harder for outside negativity to take hold in the first place
  3. Release the emotional attachment: if you know or suspect who the source of this energy is, spend time consciously and intentionally releasing your tie to that situation, even if you never confront them directly
  4. Use a short daily affirmation to anchor the work: something as simple as repeating to yourself that only love and light are welcome in your energy field, or that you are surrounded by protection
  5. Set boundaries with people who consistently project negativity toward you, whether or not they mean to. It is not unkind, it is one of the most effective forms of protection available to you

For heavier or longer standing cases, working directly with someone experienced in energy healing can identify exactly what has attached to your field and remove it far more completely than self practice alone. This is the kind of work I do with clients every week, and you can read about the full range of healing services I offer or see what other clients have experienced in their own words on the testimonials page.

Being Mindful of the Thoughts You Send Out

There is another side to all of this that most articles on this subject never mention, and it is one my family’s healing tradition has always treated as equally important. Everything I have described about how someone else’s jealousy or resentment can attach to your energy works exactly the same way in reverse. The thoughts you carry about other people, especially the ones you hold onto for a long time, travel outward too. It is worth pausing occasionally to notice whether you are carrying resentment toward someone in your own life, a coworker whose success bothers you, a family member you have not forgiven, an ex you still replay old arguments with in your head. None of this makes you a bad person. It makes you human. But part of protecting your own energy is also being honest about what you are sending out into the world, because the same emotional charge that can weigh someone else down will eventually weigh on you as well. A regular practice of forgiveness, even privately and without ever telling the other person, tends to lighten both sides of the connection at once.

You Are Never Powerless in This

Whatever has attached itself to your energy through someone else’s thoughts or emotions, it did not happen because you are weak, unlucky, or somehow deserving of it. It happened because energy moves, and it landed somewhere. The same is true in reverse. Once you understand where it came from, you can begin the work of releasing it, protecting yourself going forward, and rebuilding the parts of your life that felt stuck while it was there. I have watched clients go from feeling drained and foggy for months to feeling like themselves again within weeks of consistent clearing work. You do not have to carry this alone, and you do not have to figure it out by guessing. If you want to go deeper into daily practice, I also share guided meditations built for exactly this kind of clearing work on my YouTube channel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can someone really curse you just by thinking about you?
Yes, in the sense that sustained, intense emotion directed at you carries energetic weight and can attach to your aura over time, even without a ritual or any conscious intention to harm you.

How is a thought based curse different from black magic or a cast spell?
Black magic and cast curses generally involve deliberate ritual and intention. A thought based curse requires only strong, repeated emotion such as jealousy, resentment, or anger, which is why it can come from people who care about you and never intend you harm.

Can a family member or close friend curse me without meaning to?
Yes, and it is more common than people expect. Strong, unresolved emotion from someone close to you can reach your energy field precisely because your connection to them is already open, regardless of their intentions.

How long does it take to clear this kind of energy?
Light cases often begin to lift within days of consistent cleansing and boundary setting. Heavier or longer standing cases may take a few sessions of focused energy work to fully release.

What is the fastest way to start protecting myself today?
Begin with a short daily practice: a few minutes of visualizing protective light around you each morning, paired with a simple affirmation and clear boundaries with anyone you know is holding resentment toward you.

When should I consider working with an energy healer instead of clearing this on my own?
If the heaviness, bad luck, or fatigue has lasted more than a few weeks despite consistent self practice, or if you cannot identify the source on your own, that is usually a sign the attachment needs to be addressed directly by someone experienced in this kind of work.
